PRESERVATION 101
Here at Barton University Archives, we firmly believe that everyone’s stories matter, not just those kept in institutional repositories. To ensure the longevity of our stories and the treasured items in which they live, BUA is committed to leading in the field of preservation and making these practices accessible to the public. The information and links in the following pages will help you to protect your treasured items and to prepare for the inevitable and unexpected. If you have any questions after reading through Preservation 101, please feel free to attend a workshop or contact us to speak with a specialist.
Mission
The Barton University Archives captures, preserves, and makes accessible the day-to-day functioning of Barton University in all its many facets.

Values
Stewardship: We are expert stewards of the knowledge, collections, and resources entrusted to us. We apply our experience to sustainable and responsive practices to ensure our continued service for our users on campus and beyond.

Service: We firmly believe that items in our care and our own expertise in archival practice and the history of our community must be shared, otherwise there is no purpose to our endeavors. We anticipate and respond to the changing needs of our users on campus, in our community, and further afield.
Democratization: We create an equitable and inclusive environment for the pursuit of knowledge and its creation through our participatory collection practices; our programing for campus and local communities; and our accessible, welcoming spaces. We are deeply committed to documenting all voices of the Barton University community, recognizing gaps in our collections, and ameliorating these exclusions through collecting and programming.

Vision
We envision a campus community where all participants’ contributions and experiences are valued in the historical record, and a world where the preservation of cherished items and thus the longevity of our communities’ stories are valuable and attainable for all.
